I wasn't even going to drop in today before the Sox game. But, I felt I had to make a couple points.
-Brett Favre is reportedly very seriously considering coming out of retirement. His family is supposedly pushing him. He must be very annoying to have around the house. The Packers control his rights, but the management would probably want to go with Aaron Rodgers. The coaches will want him back. Favre won't fight management, ESPN's Chris Mortensen says, because he's such a classy guy. Mortensen and ESPN just rests at the feet of the NFL and its players. Its disgusting. Aaron Rodgers has earned his chance, been working all summer to start, it would be a classless move by Favre to come in and take back the starting spot. Classless. I know Favre is a competitor, and cannot be happy with coming as close as he did to getting back to the Super Bowl, and losing. But, its not fair to Rodgers, to decide now, or even as late as training camp, that you did not want to retire at all, that you didn't want an NFC Championship loss to be your last game.
-Marian Hossa signs a one-year deal with the Red Wings, the team that beat his former team, the Penquins for the Stanley Cup. Side note: I felt I should mention the team names. Because I am sure most of you don't even know/care/remember who played in the Stanley Cup Finals. Hossa only played for the Penquins for a few months, so he should not be considered a traitor for the move. But, Hossa was rumored to be in line for a gargantuan contract from any number of teams, even Edmonton seemed to make a late push. I found it surprising that he took a one-year deal. But, he can go to Detroit, win a Cup, up his price (I don't know how much higher it can go), and get a multi-year deal next year.
-Baron Davis joins the Clippers for far less than he was slated to get from the Golden State Warriors (17 million to 13 million per in the new deal). It is clear to me that Davis and Don Nelson were not going to be able to patch up their differences, and it played at least a big role, if not the role in the decision to opt out. If Davis can convince Elton Brand to sign back on with the Clippers, it could be an okay team. It's not a great team, it's not as good as the Lakers, not even close. But, the idea that Baron Davis and Elton Brand together are going to steal the basketball spotlight in L.A? Please. Davis-Cuttino Mobley-Al Thornton-Elton Brand-Chris Kaman. Its a nice team, maybe better than the Suns, depending on how bad Terry Porter and Steve Kerr butcher the situation in Phoenix. Eric Gordon is probably a project, at best, so the Clippers cannot look to him for contributions. It's possible that Shaun Livingston played his last game in the NBA a year and a half ago, he has certainly played his last one as a starter with the signing of Davis.
-The Celtics were apparently rebuffed by James Posey and his agent Mark Berstelstein. Danny Ainge has been making a serious push at Corey Maggette. The Spurs have reportedly offered Maggette the full mid-level exception (5.8 million), so you would have to think the Celtics are in that neighborhood. And, it would be tough, if not impossible for the Celtics to sign both. It's an intriguing move by Danny Ainge. You won a championship with your sixth man, "Big Game" James Posey, playing tenacious defense, and making the shots when they were there. And, to follow it up, you bring in a sixth man who could score 15-20 point a game off the bench. Maggette is not known for his defense, but if he comes to the Celtics, he could buy into Tom Thibodeau's system, just as previously defensively disinterested players Ray Allen and Paul Pierce did. I hear all the time the argument that the Celtics do not win the title without James Posey. Yes, they definitely do not win the title if they replace James Posey with nothing... or Tony Allen. But, can they still win a title with Maggette in place of Posey? I say it's possible, all other things being equal.
I need some rest before the live blog.

I have rediscovered these wonderfully dubbed G.I. Joe PSA's on my messageboard. Good times. This is probably my favorite. The language is a little dicey, kids.

Gang Starr- Suckas Need Bodyguards
I do not hear much about Gang Starr anymore. Underrated? Is that fair?
